Persistence, Persistence & More Persistence
For The Important - Keep Showing Up
Success in life is often attributed to things like hard work, talent, skill, intelligence and luck.
Legal practice is no different.
While these factors are undoubtedly important, I believe there is something even more critical to achieving our most important goals, the value of persistence.
A quick lawyerly caveat before I continue.
I want to emphasise that the above advice only applies to those important things you've been pursuing for a relatively short period.
There does come a point when no amount of persistence, consistency, hard work or herculean effort will improve a situation.
At that moment, you need to recognise it's time to walk away, seek help, and try something different.
Don't wait around, investing those supposed 10,000 hours hoping you'll become expert, if deep down you know it's just not going to happen.
As the saying goes, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is pretty much insanity - so yes, there are exceptions to my words of wisdom above.
Knowing when to walk away matters as much as knowing when to persist.
But aside from that, my general view remains - keep showing up for the important things - regularly, incrementally, consistently, persistently - and it will pay dividends.
The Power Of Consistency For Lawyers
Showing up persistently and consistently for what you're truly striving towards matters.
Consistently putting in the effort, day after day, can make all the difference in achieving your goals.
I remember the challenges I experienced when I first started off in legal practice
They seemed insurmountable at first, but I kept showing up, chipping away (not without its challenges, may I say) and them occasionally I would look up, reflect and see the progress I was making to becoming a better lawyer.
Persistence made all the difference.
I had to give it time though. Not just time, Time mastering my craft. Slowly, daily and strategically.

Just Keep Showing Up
It's easy to feel discouraged when we don't see immediate results - after all, success rarely happens overnight.
Trying to lose weight?
Trying to getting fitter?
Everyone knows how hard these things are to do and their ups and downs.
Overcoming discouragement is a real thing but yes, it can be done.
In my view, success usually comes from repeatedly taking small steps, done regularly and building on them incrementally.
More often than not, it’s simply about consistently showing up and putting in the work - persistently pursuing your goals.
The Power Of Regular Reflection
Sometimes, though, it’s also about stopping occasionally to regroup, reflect on what you’ve done, acknowledge what works and does not, and deciding what needs adjustment so you can stay on your path towards the bigger outcome.
And it’s in those occasional moments when you'll look up and say, "Wow, look what I’ve achieved," that you’ll find the motivation to keep going.
Persistence, persistence, persistence.
Just keep showing up.
I know, it sounds cliche, but it works.
Success through consistent effort is real.
There are countless examples around the world of ordinary people who've done extraordinary things simply by regularly pursuing and staying committed to something they truly want.
I won’t even try listing out all the famous people and their achievements.
They will all however I can tell you, have their good and bad and really bad days.
And guess what they pushed through.
